Capgo vs EAS Build, Submit, Workflows, and Update

Capgo covers the four EAS release jobs for a Capacitor app. EAS Hosting deploys Expo Router websites, which Capgo does not offer.

EAS Update

Capgo Live Updates

Push web-bundle fixes, channels, and rollback to Capacitor apps without a store review. This is the EAS Update analog for teams that kept their web UI.

Open Capacitor live updates
EAS Build

Capgo Builder

Compile and sign iOS and Android binaries in the cloud from any machine, typically in 2–3 minutes. Build time is included in every paid Capgo plan.

Open Capgo Builder
EAS Submit

Store submission

Upload a signed IPA or AAB to App Store Connect or Google Play after the build finishes. Same job as EAS Submit, for Capacitor artifacts.

See store submit on Builder
EAS Workflows

CI/CD with Capgo Build

Keep GitHub Actions or GitLab CI. Call Capgo Build on each commit for signed native binaries instead of adopting Expo-only workflow YAML.

Where Expo Application Services is the better choice

No tool fits every team. These are the cases where we would point you to the other option.

Your app is React Native

Expo and EAS are built for React Native. If your mobile UI is already React Native, keep EAS; Capgo does not update React Native apps. [2]

You need a free plan

The Expo Free plan includes 1,000 update MAU and up to 15 Android and 15 iOS builds. Capgo has a 14-day trial but no free plan. [1]

You want web hosting too

EAS Hosting deploys Expo Router web projects and API routes. Capgo does not host websites. [6]

Migration path

From web app to iOS and Android with Capgo

There is no code migration from React Native to Capacitor. The path is to keep your web app and wrap it, then ship it with Capgo.

  1. Wrap your web app with Capacitor

Add @capacitor/core and @capacitor/cli to your web project, run npx cap init, then add the iOS and Android platforms.

  2. Install the Capgo updater

Run npx @capgo/cli@latest init. It adds the app to Capgo, installs @capgo/capacitor-updater, and walks you through the first bundle upload.

  3. Build native binaries

Run npx @capgo/cli@latest build request --platform ios (or android) to build and sign binaries in the cloud. A typical build takes 2–3 minutes.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an EAS alternative for Capacitor?
An EAS alternative is a cloud stack that covers the same jobs as Expo Application Services: native builds, store submit, CI/CD, and over-the-air updates. Capgo is that stack for Capacitor apps. Keep EAS if the app is React Native.
Is Expo better than Capgo?
Expo is the better fit if your app is already React Native. Capgo is the better fit if you have a web app and want to ship it as a mobile app with Capacitor instead of rebuilding the UI in React Native.
Does Capgo replace EAS Update?
For Capacitor apps, yes: Capgo Live Updates is the EAS Update analog. It ships web-bundle fixes with channels, rollback, and device logs. Capgo cannot update Expo apps. Expo apps should keep expo-updates.
Does Capgo replace EAS Build and EAS Submit?
For Capacitor projects, Capgo Builder compiles and signs iOS and Android binaries and can submit them to the stores. EAS Build and EAS Submit stay the path for Expo and React Native apps.
Does Capgo replace EAS Workflows?
Capgo runs signed native builds from GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, and similar CI. It is not a hosted React Native CI like EAS Workflows. Keep your existing CI and call Capgo Build from it.
Can Capgo host Expo Router web apps?
No. EAS Hosting deploys Expo Router websites and API routes. Capgo does not offer web hosting. Use Capgo for Capacitor live updates and native builds only.
Is Capgo cheaper than EAS?
For paid plans, Capgo starts lower: $12/month billed yearly, or $14/month billed monthly, with native build time included. Paid EAS starts at $19/month plus usage, and Production is $199/month plus usage. Expo also has a free plan; Capgo does not.
Which stack should a web team choose?
If you already have a working web app, Capacitor with Capgo lets you keep that codebase and add iOS, Android, live updates, native builds, and rollback. Expo makes sense when you want a React Native app.
