Step by step

How to find your iPhone UDID without a Mac

Four steps on the device itself. Most people finish in under a minute.

  1. Step 1

Open this page in Safari on the device

Use the physical iPhone or iPad whose UDID you need. Chrome and other iOS browsers cannot pass profiles to Settings, so use Safari.

  2. Step 2

    Download the UDID profile

Tap Download UDID profile and choose Allow when iOS asks to download a configuration profile.

  3. Step 3

    Install it from Settings

Open the Settings app, tap Profile Downloaded near the top, select Install, and enter your device passcode to confirm.

  4. Step 4

    Copy your UDID

Safari opens the result page with the UDID, model, iOS version, and serial number. Tap Copy next to the UDID and send it to your developer.

Basics

What is a UDID and when do you need it?

The UDID (Unique Device Identifier) is a permanent ID tied to one iPhone or iPad. It does not change after a reset or an iOS update, and Apple hides it from the Settings app and from apps.

Developers ask for it when they need to install an app on your device outside the App Store:

  • Ad hoc builds shared with testers, clients, or QA.
  • Development builds installed from Xcode or a cloud build service.
  • Provisioning profiles that list the exact devices allowed to run the app.

TestFlight and App Store installs do not need a UDID.

Security and privacy

What the profile does, and does not do

  • It uses Apple’s standard Profile Service flow and only requests read-only identifiers: UDID, product, iOS version, serial, IMEI, MEID, and device name.
  • It does not install certificates, VPNs, or device management, and cannot read your data, apps, photos, or location.
  • The profile is signed by Capgo, and each download carries a unique challenge that the device response must match.
  • Results are handed to your browser through the redirect link and a backup cookie that expires after five minutes. The result page removes the details from the address bar and clears the cookie when it loads. Nothing is saved to a database.

For developers

Register the UDID in Apple Developer

  1. Sign in to Apple Developer and open Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles.
  2. Open Devices, select the plus button, and choose the iOS platform.
  3. Enter a recognizable device name and paste the UDID, or upload a list of devices as a file.
  4. Edit your development or ad hoc provisioning profile, select the new device, and download it again.
  5. Rebuild and sign the app with the updated profile, then share the build with the tester.

Apple allows up to 100 devices of each type per membership year. Need a signing certificate first? Use the iOS certificate generator.

Alternatives

Other ways to find a UDID

If you already have a computer and a cable at hand, these methods work too.

Finder on macOS
Connect the device, select it in the Finder sidebar, then click the grey text under the device name until the UDID appears. Right-click to copy.
Xcode
Open Window, then Devices and Simulators, and select the device. The Identifier field is the UDID.
iTunes or Apple Devices on Windows
Connect the device, open the device summary, and click the Serial Number label until it switches to UDID.
Apple Configurator
Select the connected device, open the info view, and copy the ECID and UDID fields.

Troubleshooting

UDID profile not working?

Nothing happens after tapping Download UDID profile
You are probably in Chrome, Firefox, or an in-app browser. Copy the link, open it in Safari, and try again.
Profile Downloaded is missing in Settings
Profiles expire from that screen after about eight minutes. Download the profile again, or look under Settings, General, VPN & Device Management.
Profile installation failed
Check that the device is online, then retry. If the device is supervised or managed by an MDM, profile installs may be blocked by policy.
The result page says no device response is available
The redirect did not reach this browser (for example, it was opened in another browser) and the five-minute backup cookie has expired or was already cleared. Download and install the profile again from Safari.

FAQ

iPhone UDID finder FAQ

Answers about UDIDs, the configuration profile, privacy, and registering test devices with Apple.

What is a UDID?

A UDID (Unique Device Identifier) is a permanent identifier Apple assigns to every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Developers register UDIDs in Apple Developer so a device can install development and ad hoc builds. Recent devices use a 25-character format such as 00008110-001A2B3C4D5E6F7G, older ones a 40-character hexadecimal string.

How do I find my iPhone UDID without a computer?

Open this page in Safari on the iPhone, tap Download UDID profile, then open Settings, tap Profile Downloaded, and install it. Safari then opens a result page with your UDID and a copy button. No Mac, PC, iTunes, Finder, or Xcode is needed.

Why can I not see my UDID in the iPhone Settings app?

Apple does not show the UDID anywhere in Settings, and since iOS 7 apps cannot read it either. The only on-device way is a profile-service request like this one, which asks iOS to share the UDID with the page you opened.

Why do I need to install a profile?

The configuration profile is Apple’s standard Profile Service mechanism. It only asks iOS for device attributes (UDID, product, version, serial, IMEI, MEID, device name), sends them back to this site, and then shows them to you. It does not install certificates, change settings, or give remote access to the device.

Is it safe? Is my device data stored?

Capgo signs the profile and only requests read-only identifiers. The device details are passed to the result page in the redirect link and in a backup cookie that expires after five minutes. When the result page loads, it removes the details from the address bar and clears the cookie. They are not saved to a database or shared with third parties.

How do I remove the profile after getting my UDID?

The profile only collects identifiers and is not kept as a permanent configuration profile. If it ever shows up, go to Settings, General, VPN & Device Management, tap the Capgo profile, and select Remove Profile.

Do I need a UDID for TestFlight?

No. TestFlight testers are invited by email or a public link, and no UDID registration is needed. You need the UDID for development builds, ad hoc distribution, and tools that install builds directly on a registered device.

How do I register a UDID in Apple Developer?

Go to Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, open Devices, select the plus button, enter a device name and the UDID, and save. Then edit or regenerate your development or ad hoc provisioning profile so it includes the new device, and rebuild the app.

Can I find a UDID on Windows or Mac instead?

Yes. On a Mac, connect the device, select it in Finder, and click the text under the device name until the UDID appears, or open Xcode, Window, Devices and Simulators. On Windows, the same click trick works in iTunes or the Apple Devices app. This page avoids the cable and computer entirely.

Does it work on iPad and with browsers other than Safari?

It works on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Use Safari, because iOS only lets Safari hand configuration profiles to the Settings app. Devices managed by an MDM may block profile installation; in that case ask your administrator or use Finder or Xcode.
